Mayo also reports specific storage limits and describes the test method as an immunoenzymatic assay, meaning the test uses antibodies that bind IL-6 and create a measurable signal.

So if two IL-6 results come from different labs, do not overread a tiny difference. A change from 5.8 to 6.3 pg/mL may look dramatic because it crosses a line, but it may be less meaningful than a clear pattern over time, especially if symptoms, CRP, fever, medication changes, or recent exercise changed too.

If you are looking at a flagged IL-6 result, do not start an anti-inflammatory supplement just to lower IL-6. The stronger move is to repeat or interpret the result with the clinician who ordered it, using the same lab when possible and noting whether you had an infection, injury, vaccination, surgery, intense workout, flare of a known condition, or poor sleep in the previous few days.

Supplements such as omega-3s and curcumin are often studied with IL-6 as an outcome. Evidence suggests they may shift inflammatory markers in some groups, but results vary by dose, population, baseline inflammation, and study design. IL-6 is useful because it can show that the immune system is active. It is not useful when treated as a standalone score to optimize.
