The phrase tumor necrosis factor sounds as if this blood marker belongs mainly to cancer. That name came from early experiments where researchers saw a substance linked with tumor tissue damage. In real life, TNF-alpha is much broader. It is one of the immune system's fast alarm signals.
The surprise is that a small amount can be useful. When immune cells meet an infection or injury, they release TNF-alpha so nearby cells change behavior. Blood vessels become more open.
